Torrevieja by motorhome: a practical guide
Torrevieja is one of the easiest areas on the Costa Blanca for a motorhome trip: flat ground, mild winters, two salt lagoons and miles of coast down to La Zenia and Punta Prima. Here's what we tell our customers when they collect their motorhome, and what we've learned sleeping in the area ourselves.
Don't have a motorhome yet? We hand it over in Torrevieja, in the Habaneras or La Zenia Boulevard car park, or at our base in San Pedro del Pinatar. See our motorhome hire in Torrevieja or our main base for motorhome hire in Alicante.
Getting around Torrevieja by motorhome
The town is flat and easy to get around. The centre has narrow streets and little parking, so it's easiest to leave the motorhome just outside and get about on foot, by bike or by bus. Outside the centre, in the residential areas and along the coast, there's plenty of space.
Sleeping in your motorhome outside a campsite
We've slept in our motorhome many times all over the area, from Torrevieja down to La Zenia and Punta Prima, and we've hardly ever had a problem. There are plenty of places to stop for the night near the sea. What matters is doing it right:
- Park, don't camp. You can sleep inside the motorhome, but no awning, tables or chairs, no levelling blocks and no emptying water in the street.
- Watch the signs. At some small coves and beaches the council has put up signs banning vehicles wider than 2.2 metres. These are one-off cases, but you can't go in there.
- Nature park: you can't stay overnight around the La Mata and Torrevieja lagoons.
- Leave the spot clean and don't stay in one place for weeks: that way motorhomes stay welcome.
To empty your tanks, fill up with water or just be more comfortable for a few days, a campsite is best. You'll find them in our guide to campsites in and around Torrevieja. If you're heading towards Santa Pola or Crevillent, see also the campsites in and around Elche.
What to see in Torrevieja
The lagoons: the pink one and the green one
La Mata and Torrevieja Lagoons Nature Park has two faces: the Torrevieja lagoon, which turns pink because of its algae and salt, and La Mata, greener and with paths for walking and spotting flamingos. Start at the visitor centre.
The promenade and beaches
The Juan Aparicio promenade runs along the town-centre seafront. Playa del Cura and Los Locos are right in town; to the north, La Mata beach is long, with dunes; to the south, the coves of La Zenia and Punta Prima.
The floating museums
In the fishing port you can go aboard the S-61 Delfín submarine and the Albatros III patrol boat. Entry is about €2, and they close on rainy days. For the submarine you need to be at least 1.15 m tall.
The story of salt
Torrevieja grew thanks to salt. The Eras de la Sal, by the promenade, are the old loading dock where salt was put on ships, and the Museo del Mar y de la Sal tells that story.
When to go
- Winter: in January it's about 16 °C by day, 11 °C at night, with around 9 hours of sunshine. That's why so many travellers from northern Europe come.
- Spring and autumn: pleasant temperatures, fewer people and lower prices. Our favourite time.
- Summer: hot, with busy beaches. The Aquopolis water park opens (June to early September), and in the second half of July the International Habaneras Competition takes place.
Routes from Torrevieja
Torrevieja is a good starting point for the Mar Menor, Cabo de Palos, Cartagena or the Guardamar dunes. You'll find ideas on our motorhome hire in Torrevieja page and in our motorhome routes on the Costa Blanca.
