If you're thinking about renting a motorhome or campervan for the first time, this page answers the most common questions: what licence you need, what size vehicle to choose, how many days is worth renting for the first time, and what mistakes to avoid.
What licence do I need to rent a motorhome?
A standard category B driving licence is all you need to rent a motorhome or campervan.
At LSR365, the minimum driver age is 27, and you'll need to have held your licence for at least 4 years.
Campervan or motorhome for your first trip?
For your first trip, I'd recommend a campervan up to 6 metres long.
A lot of people worry about the size of the vehicle, but you get used to it fast. Usually, after 20 or 30 minutes behind the wheel, you already have a feel for where it ends and stop thinking about it.
A 6-metre campervan is easier to park, more manageable in cities, and more practical on narrow roads.
Even travelling as a family of up to four, a campervan is still a solid choice for a first trip. If you enjoy this kind of holiday after your first go, you can try a bigger motorhome next time.
How many days should you rent a motorhome for the first time?
You can try a motorhome for 2 or 3 days, but for a first-time experience I'd recommend 5 to 6 days. Weekend motorhome rental in Alicante
In that time, you can sleep in different spots — a night by the sea, a stay at a campsite, or a trip to the mountains and lakes. That way you get to experience different ways of travelling by motorhome, not just the drive from A to B.
You'll also have time to top up the fresh water tank, empty the grey water, and deal with the chemical toilet.
After a trip like that, you'll know whether this kind of holiday is for you or not.
I don't recommend booking two weeks for your first experience. It's better to take a shorter trip and, if you like it, plan a longer route next time.
What should you look for when choosing a motorhome?
If you plan to spend several nights away from campsites, it is important to know the autonomy of the motorhome. Ask how many litres of fresh water the tank holds and how many days the leisure battery usually lasts under normal use.
If you are planning to travel outside Spain, confirm that the insurance also covers other countries and includes roadside assistance.
It is also worth checking whether there is any mileage limit. Some companies include unlimited miles while others apply a daily or per-trip limit.
What you need to know before your first trip
One of the most common mistakes is trying to cover too many kilometres on the first day. After the flight, picking up the motorhome and buying food, I do not recommend planning too long a journey.
I'd also recommend having at least the first one or two nights planned out. After the first night, you'll usually have a much better feel for what kind of trip you enjoy most. Some people prefer staying by the sea, others head for the mountains, and some find they actually enjoy campsites more.
From that point on, it's much easier to plan the rest of the route, because you're no longer deciding things from home while staring at maps — you're deciding on the road, based on what you're actually enjoying.
Another common mistake is packing too much. Large suitcases tend to be impractical inside a motorhome, since they end up getting shuffled around constantly. Duffel bags or backpacks tend to work much better for this kind of trip.
Water, electricity and campsites
Before their first trip, a lot of people ask where to top up the fresh water tank, empty the grey water, or empty the chemical toilet.
In practice, it's rarely an issue. Spain has plenty of campsites, motorhome service areas, and petrol stations where you can take care of all of this.
On top of that, these spots are easy to find using Google Maps or apps designed specifically for motorhome travellers.

Frequently asked questions about motorhome rental
What is the excess and the deposit?
The excess is €300. In the event of damage covered by the insurance, the maximum amount payable by the customer is €300. The deposit is €500 and is refunded at the end of the rental once the condition of the vehicle has been checked.
Is there a mileage limit?
Yes. The limit is 150 km per day. For rentals of more than 8 days, the mileage is unlimited. If you prefer not to have a mileage limit, you can purchase unlimited mileage for €10 a day.
How can I book a motorhome?
To confirm the booking, a payment of €100 is required. The remaining amount is payable on the day of motorhome collection, in cash or by bank transfer.
Can I travel with my dog?
Yes, of course. Pets are welcome and you can travel with your dog in our campervans and motorhomes.
Can I travel with small children?
Yes. You can install a child seat with an ISOFIX system or a seat that is secured with the seat belt. It is also possible to use a booster seat. The seats have seat belts just like in a conventional car.
How is the deposit paid?
The deposit can be paid in cash or by bank transfer. A credit card is not required.
Can I collect the motorhome from Alicante airport?
Yes. We can deliver the motorhome to Alicante airport. It is also possible to arrange delivery or collection at other locations, subject to availability and prior agreement.
Can I collect or return the motorhome outside normal opening hours?
In many cases yes. We always try to adapt to our customers' schedules. A later return than usual is usually possible when there is no other booking scheduled for that same day. We recommend checking with us before confirming the booking.
Can you park anywhere?
Yes. You can park a motorhome anywhere parking is permitted and there are no signs specifically prohibiting motorhome parking.
What is not permitted is putting out the awning, taking out tables, chairs or other items outside the vehicle in places where regulations do not allow it.
Can you travel to other countries in a motorhome?
Yes. You can travel around the EU with our campervans and motorhomes. If you're planning to travel outside the EU, you'll need to let us know in advance so we can arrange the right insurance cover. For that reason, we'd recommend telling us your route before you travel.
